I just ordered a pair of these, has anybody kept or bred these fish? the plan is to keep them in a small tank by themselves, with maybe some java moss & some java fern on some bog wood.

Sounds like a good setup there Big J

I would sugest that you try to get a nother pair, as most livebearer's to much better if there a several fish to start off with.

Remember to feed lots of live food like brine shrimp, and do small water changer but often with these fish.

Good luck and let use know how it goes [:)]

Hi Big J
i keep these fish in an 18x12x12 and they do very well. i find they are slow growing but the females seem to drop fry often, although small broods. i have seen the males chase the fry so i keep plenty of wool mops in the tank. i feed live baby brine daily with a suppliment of flake foods every other day. i think these are a very smart looking fish.

thanks for the replies, I have until wednesday to get sorted out for them. Do you hatch your own BBS? Or can you but it live from your lfs? I have only seen adult brine at ym lfs

Ask at any FLS (local fish shop) for Brine shrimp eggs.

You have to hatch it, in a salt soluation mixing 1 table spoone of sea salt (not table salt), then aerate strongly in a old pop bottle or milk bottle.

After 24 hours the eggs hatch, remove the aeration and after 5 min's you should get a layer of shells on the surface, donot feed these to you fish, underneath this, and on the bottom you should see a layer of NHS (newly hatched shrimp), this a bright orange, and if you look closely to it you will see it moving.

You have to not remove the NHS from the  salt soluation, get a very fine mest cloth or a fine mest net, now get a length of aeration pipe, get a syphone going and syphone as much brinr shrimp out as posible on to the cloth or mest, you should end up with an orange mass left in it, this is what you fees to the fish.

This may sound quite hard but it's not rearly once you get it going, also to get the best resualts from all fish (breeding and keeping) this is what you need.

Good luck hope you give it a go.

I hatch my bs using an old 2 litre pop bottle with the bottom cut out. hang the bottle up side down on a hook. seal the cap in place with silicone and drill a hole in the cap big enough to take green or blue airline joint, the sort used to join 2 peices of airline together. silicone this in the cap. once this is done put the airline on the cap and about 6-12 inches down the airline put a valve so you can turn off the air. you now have a hatcher. i use sea salt from the store. it is pure sea salt used in salt grinders. it works great and is only about 80p. use 2 and a half tablespoons in the bottle with fresh tapwater. wait a few hours then put in the bs eggs. in 24 hours you turn off the air and wait 5 mins. you can then use the airline already in place to syphon off the bbs you need. reconnect the air, turn the valve back to open and the remaining water and bbs should be pushed back into the bottle. sounds hard but is very easy once you get it up and running again. you top up the water level as it drops adding more salt each time, only enough to replace that taken out. i change the whole lot every 2 weeks as the bs shells build up.

Keith, how long does it usually take your neo. elegans to show colour, I have had some young which I beleive to ge them, but haven't had any sign of colouration yet, they are nearly 3 weeks old, I know they are still young, but I just wondered when I would get some colouring!
