Hi,

I picked up some new endlers on sunday from someone in Doncaster.
I ended up getting about 25 including some very big fat females (for £10!).

I didnt notice when they were in the bag, but when i got them home i noticed that they weren't as colourful as my others. They have mainly orange colouring, but little or no black or green. Is this normal? He had hundreds of them in his tank, I was wondering whether this could be the result of inbreeding?

anybody know if this happens?

PS I haven't added them to the same tank as my existing endlers yet.

Could be a number of things, the ones that spring to mind are:-

1) stress of the move / change of environment
2) juvenile's
3) inbreeding
4) cross breeding with guppies

The first 2 are of least concern as they recover/acclimatise or grow they will get there colour.

Not to sure about inbreeding and recovery from it, may be some one else can offer advice there.

As to cross breeding, this can be very difficult to tell if it is the case.
Even then you are at best guessing.

Look at your females from both groups compare them to each other.

Look at the anal and dorsal fin are they the same shape on both?
Do they both have the fish net pattern?
Do they both have the slight dark green tint?

The biggest indicator of hybrids is with both the males and females

do they easily breed with guppies?

guppies and endlers can interbreed, but normally will not.

Most F1 hybrids are sterile, but a small percentage will not be.

The F1 hybrids that are fertile will readily breed with endlers, guppies and other fertile hybrids.

The offspring of these F1 hybrids will readily breed with endlers, guppies and other fertile hybrids also

I think it was just the stress from moving, they have coloured up nicely now :)
