With Xenotoca eiseni, it is sometimes confusing because you have a few different types.

You have the gold saddle morph which has a gold stripe down its side, the normal aquarium type which has a bright red tail and some of the other wild species such as the one from Granja Sauharipa which has a duller tail.

Generally though, the females are all reasonably similar.

I reckon that I will be able to work out the difference between Limia melanogaster, Characodon lateralis and Xenotoca eiseni, so if you PM me your address, I will PM you my phone number.

Hi Alison

the eiseni are Granja Sauharipa, the ilyodon, still not sure what ones they are, the lateralis would be 'los berros, but the limias could be either melanogaster or perugiae, as these were the ones i sold a while ago.
if you can get a picture of a female then it will be easy to tell as the melanogaster females have a much bluer and bigger gravid spot, whereas the perugiae females tend to have a faint gravid spot, if one at all.
i have attached a few pics to show the differences between the two females. hope this helps (this is assuming you have some females to compare the pics with)lol

Well if it is the species from Granja Sahuaripa then (correct me if I am wrong Keith) the red tail is far less pronounced and there is not such a marked difference in sexually mature, but not full size males and females.

It should still be easy to tell the difference between lateralis and eiseni.

agreed Duncan, the colours of the eiseni are not as bright as other variations are, but still a nice looking fish.
you can easily tell differences between eiseni and lateralis as body shape is very different, eiseni being a much deeper fish and the lateralis males having a nice deep red to their sides.also my lateralis females get dark blotches to their sides.
hope this helps Alison[:D]

Hi Keith,

i am now rteasonably sue that they are all eiseni not lateralis. I think I was looking at immature ones and they have a dark band down their middle which confused me a bit.
I don't think I have any female limias. Thanks for your help everybody.
