Don't worry about infrequent posts. You are more than welcome here.

I don't have the Hummingbird Swordtail, but they are a lovely fish. I know quite a few members of the BLA have them; they are named after the Hummingbird Highway in Belize, where they are collected I believe.

I think David MacAllister (on here and the BLA) and Trevor Williams (only at BLA I believe) are the best people to speak to about these fish but I have no idea whether they have any spare.

I'd like to know more about these fish. What's their scientific name and are there any pictures of them available.

Hi Edinjapan,

Hummingbird Swordtails are a Xiphophorus helleri wild strain from Hummingbird Highway in Belize.

I don't have any photos.

They are really nice looking fish. I have a number of species of wild xiphs and am always on the lookout for more.

Well, I do sometimes send fish to and from Japan so I know it is possible.

Who did you send them to? Yasuo? Kazu? Tama Chan? I'm a member of the Japanese Livebearer Association as are the abovementioned characters. Yasuo hasn't made any trips yet to England but he does visit Martin and Harro regularily.

Any goodieds on that list? I'll have to see if he'll be bringing any to the next meeting of the JLA then. I've been looking for some of the Illyodon species and also for the Xiph pygmeus and nigrensis for years.

Jim Langhammer offered me a nice selection of his fish with the sole proviso being I have to get to Ann Arbor Michigan to pick them up.

Harro is now farming algae from the last report and doesn't have many interesting fish these days...

I will have to see what I can do.

The Ilyodon and the pygmaeus should not be too much of a problem, but I do not know anyone with nigrensis at the moment.

I will see if I can get some together when I send my next lot of fish to Kazu. I am planning to do so toward the end of this month, if the temperature ever warms up.

Hello, I wish you much fun with your sword-tails. I am a biologist so I vaguely recall a paper by Axel Meyer, cited in a book by West-Eberhard. In that paper treatments with hormones result in suppression or enhancement (I don´t remember) of sword-tails in species where swords aren´t/are expected in nature.

I only have 60 litre tanks and I always like to give large tanks to my fish (so I guess 60 litres would be enough just for heterandria or so), but how large a tank would you give to your sword tails? They can grow large can´t they?

Depends on which types Dourado, but 60 litres is a little small.

I have friends who keep all of their fish in tanks around 60 litres (including Swordtails) and less with no problems, in fact they do very well with them, although having seen Swordtails in a large tank in Norway, they did seem far happier and were far more nicely coloured.

You could try some of the wild platies though, I have kept Xiph andersi in a tank around 50 litres (without much success) and have done quite well with milleri in even smaller tanks.

The problem is not so much the tank size in itself. It is more by coincidence that my two tanks have some 70 litres or so each. I already asked for, and the production costs for much larger tanks are still quite cheap.  I also think that in larger tanks the individuals actually grow larger, or is this a myth?

I don't think it is a myth Dourado, although space is not the only requirement.
